It might be the cheapest way to own a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle. An extremely trimmed ’52 Mantle is currently up for sale on eBay, with bidding over $7,100.
Greg Morris Graded posted the Beckett-authenticated card of the New York Yankees legend on eBay on Feb. 24. Morris tells Sports Collectors Daily he got the card in a run of sets he bought from an auction house last month.
The Mantle card essentially looks like a die-cut. Someone, presumably decades ago before knowing what the value of this card was, trimmed around Mantle’s image and eliminated the background, left border, and part of the right border.
The back of the card isn’t any better. Paper is stuck to much of it and visible tape covers a portion of the card, as well.
The front of the Mantle is also filled with creases and scratches.
It’s a far cry from the most expensive ’52 Mantle ever sold — which went for $12.6 million, an all-time record.
Bidding for the well-worn Mantle ends Tuesday night.
