MLB Auctioning Special 1/1 Autographed Topps Now Lou Gehrig Day Cards To Benefit ALS Charity

To commemorate the fourth annual Lou Gehrig Day on June 2, MLB Auctions is holding a one-of-a-kind auction. Fans will have the chance to bid on autographed 1/1 Lou Gehrig Day Topps Now cards. The proceeds will benefit the Sean M. Healey & AMG Center for ALS.

MLB writer and researcher Sarah Langs, who is currently battling ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, selected one player from each team to be featured on the Topps Now cards. According to, Langs selected these players because they “are tied to Gehrig through a unique statistical connection, their support for the ALS community or their passion for baseball.” Langs will be honored by the Philadelphia Phillies on Lou Gehrig Day at Citizens Bank Park prior to their game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Unfortunately, ALS is currently an incurable disease. It was first identified in 1869 but became more widely known when Gehrig, the legendary Hall of Famer for the New York Yankees, had to retire in 1939 when he started exhibiting symptoms. He would pass away from ALS on June 2, 1941, at the age of 37.

“ALS is a disease that affects the nerve cells that make muscles work in both the upper and lower parts of the body,” writes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “This disease makes the nerve cells stop working and die. The nerves lose the ability to trigger specific muscles, which causes the muscles to become weak and leads to paralysis.”

Around 30,000 people in the United States live with ALS. The CDC notes 5,000 new patients are diagnosed with the debilitating disease yearly.
