OJ Simpson Game-Worn Bills Jersey Bought For $1,000 On Facebook Sells For Record $74,000

An O.J. Simpson 1972 game-worn Buffalo Bills jersey set a record at auction on Saturday. The photo-matched jersey worn in three games reeled in $74,420 at Goldin. It’s the most ever paid for a Simpson game-worn jersey, which was initially bought for $1,000 on Facebook.

There were 61 bids before the online auction ended. The white away jersey jumped from $30,000 to $61,000 when extended bidding opened — more than doubling in price.

The sale comes two months after Simpson died from prostate cancer at the age of 76.

“In 14 games, Simpson rushed for a league-leading 1,251 yards with 6 touchdowns to finish third in the AP MVP voting and second in Offensive Player of the Year voting. Simpson first used this jersey in a Week 5 matchup against the Oakland Raiders on Oct. 15, where he rushed for 144 yards on 28 carries in the 28-16 loss. Then, in a Week 6 game against the Miami Dolphins, Simpson rushed for 57 yards on 16 carries in a Oct. 22 24-23 loss. Finally, in a Week 9 41-3 loss to the New York Jets on Nov. 12, Simpson recorded 89 rushing yards on 20 carries. The jersey features all numbering and lettering in the applique style,” Goldin writes in the description lot.

According to The Collectibles Guru on Twitter, a collector originally bought this Simpson jersey on Facebook Marketplace for $1,000. The seller claimed it was a game-worn jersey, but it was never authenticated. After purchasing the jersey, the collector sent it to MeiGray to get it authenticated, and it ended up being photo-matched to three games from the 1972 season.

Simpson memorabilia has seen a jump in prices since his death. Last month, a signed Simpson dance recital program from the night his ex-wife, Nicole Brown-Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, were killed went for $4,446 at Lelands. In April, Simpson’s unsigned Bank of America credit card sold for $10,675. Just last week, Goldin netted $6,710 for Simpson’s Florida driver’s license.

In 2018, Simpson’s Bills jersey from 1973 — when he became the first player to rush for 2,000 yards in a season — scored $13,200 at Heritage Auctions. In 2022, Simpson’s player-worn USC college jersey from 1967 went for $25,726 at Grey Flannel Auctions.
