Crypt Near Marilyn Monroe And Hugh Hefner Sells For $195,000 At Auction

A person spent nearly $200,000 to rest in peace next to actress Marilyn Monroe and Playboy founder Hugh Hefner for eternity. A one-space mausoleum crypt near where Monroe and Hefner are buried sold for $195,000 at Julien’s Auctions over the weekend. The crypt is located in the Corridor of Memories, Wall B, Space C-3 at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park & Mortuary in Los Angeles.

The winning bidder has been identified as tech investor Anthony Jabin, according to Sky News. Jabin will now be buried one row above and four spaces to the left of Monroe.

“I’ve always dreamt of being next to Marilyn Monroe for the rest of my life and I bought Hugh Hefner’s round bed and Marilyn Monroe’s bathing suit at Julien’s this weekend,” Jabin told Sky News.

Bidding for the crypt fell below expectations, however, as it was estimated to sell for between $200,000 to $400,000.

“Monroe died unexpectedly at age 36 on August 4, 1962. Baseball legend Joe DiMaggio, Monroe’s ex-husband, organized a private funeral for her that took place in the cemetery chapel on August 8. DiMaggio is reported to have chosen this location because Grace Goddard and Ana Lower, who had both helped care for Monroe as a young girl when her mother became incapacitated, had been buried there. Monroe fans from around the world continue to make pilgrimages to the cemetery to pay respects to the entertainer,” the lot description reads on Julien’s Auctions.

Hefner purchased the crypt to the immediate left of Monroe’s in 1992, and was interred there when he died in 2017 at the age of 91. According to the Los Angeles Times, Hefner bought the plot for $75,000. Monroe was the cover model in Playboy’s first-ever issue in 1953.

“Spending eternity next to Marilyn is an opportunity too sweet to pass up,” Hefner said in an interview with the LA Times in 2009.

If the $195,000 plot was out of your range, starting prices for mausoleums at Pierce Brothers Westwood Memorial Park begin at $46,995.

Other famous faces buried there include Natalie Wood, Farrah Fawcett, Ryan O’Neal, and Jack Lemmon.

This wasn’t the only high-priced item available as part of the “Icons: Playboy, Hugh Hefner, and Marilyn Monroe” auction. Collectors also purchased:

  • Hugh Hefner’s Burgundy Smoking Jacket, Silk Pajamas, And Slippers With Magazine ($35,750)
  • Marilyn Monroe’s “The Seven Year Itch” Film-Worn Black Evening Gown With Photo And Magazine ($127,000)
