Harrison Butker’s Chiefs Jersey Becomes Top-Seller Following Controversial Speech

Jersey sales for Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker have soared despite being skewered on social media following a controversial commencement speech. Butker’s Chiefs jersey ranks first, sixth and seventh among top-sellers on the Chiefs Pro Shop, Fanatics and NFL Shop websites — beating out the likes of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

This new-found popularity comes after what many critics called sexist and homophobic remarks Butker made while delivering the commencement address at Benedictine College, a private Catholic college outside of Kansas City. In his speech, Butker claimed Catholic leaders were “pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America.”

“I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you,” said Butker. “Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say that her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.”

Butker referred to LGBT Pride Month, which is celebrated in June, as a “deadly sin sort of pride that has a month dedicated to it” and slammed President Joe Biden’s abortion stance by stating the commander in chief is “vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies.”

After Butker’s remarks went viral, he was heavily criticized for what many say are archaic stances in today’s modern world.

“Kansas City Chiefs player Harrison Butker’s commencement speech was not only a clear miss, it was inaccurate, ill-informed, and woefully out of step with Americans about Pride, LGBTQ people and women,” says Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD. “Those with expansive platforms, especially athletes, should use their voices to uplift and expand understanding and acceptance in the world. Instead, Butker’s remarks undermine experiences not of his own and reveal him to be one who goes against his own team’s commitment to the Kansas City community, and the NFL’s standards for respect, inclusion, and diversity across the League.”

The NFL also distanced itself from Butker.

“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity,” says Jonathan Beane, NFL senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, in a statement. “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

There is even a petition on Change.org calling for the Chiefs to release Butker that has amassed more than 184,000 signatures as of Friday afternoon.

“The harmful remarks made by Harrison Butker, kicker of the Kansas City Chiefs, during his commencement address at Benedictine College were unacceptable. His comments were sexist, homophobic, anti-trans, anti-abortion and racist. These dehumanizing remarks against LGBTQ+ individuals, attacks on abortion rights and racial discrimination perpetuate division and undermine human rights,” the petition reads.

The Chiefs have yet to comment.

Since being drafted out of Georgia Tech in 2017, Butker has been one of the best kickers in the NFL, winning three Super Bowls with the Chiefs in that span.
