Hobby Shakeup: Parent Company Of CGC Cards Acquiring JSA

There’s another mammoth shakeup in the collectibles world. Certified Collectibles Group, parent company of card grader CGC Cards, announced Wednesday it has acquired James Spence Authentication (JSA). This comes on the heels of PSA parent company, Collectibles, acquiring SGC.

Certified Collectibles Group looks at the acquisition of JSA as a “seamless solution to have autographed collectibles authenticated, graded and encapsulated.”

“CCG and JSA are the perfect match, with a shared passion for collectibles along with an unwavering commitment to expertise and integrity,” says Steven Eichenbaum, CEO of the Certified Collectibles Group. “I could not be more pleased with the addition of JSA and the Spences to the CCG family, and I think collectors will love the simplicity and scope of our combined services.”

Last year, CGC graded 1.75 million cards, which was up 8 percent year-over-year, according to GemRate. CGC is also well-known for grading comic books.

JSA, which was founded in 2005 by James Spence Jr., has “built the world’s largest autograph database of nearly 1 million images.” Spence Jr and James Spence III will remain with JSA, and Mark Pepitone, a co-owner of JSA, will serve as a senior advisor.

Under Certified Collectibles Group, JSA will begin expanding services to offer grading and encapsulation. Sports business journalist Darren Rovell reports JSA is weeks away from encapsulation.

Beginning next month, collectors will be able to use a single online form to submit their memorabilia for JSA autograph authentication and CGC grading and encapsulation. This is the first time CGC will offer full authentication and grading services for collectibles with unwitnessed autographs.

“This is the ideal next chapter in JSA’s history. CCG’s mission and vision are aligned with our own, and we are excited to see what the company’s extensive experience and resources can do for autograph authentication and collecting,” says Spence Jr. and Pepitone in a statement. “This combination is a true testament to the outstanding work of the entire JSA team, whose efforts have made JSA the world’s most trusted name in autograph authentication.”

Just last July, CGC Trading Cards and Certified Sports Guaranty merged into CGC Cards.

Monetary details of the CCG-JSA deal are not known.

Last month, Collectibles, the parent company of PSA, rocked the hobby community by acquiring SGC. Collectibles now owns two of big four grading companies.
