Sealed 4GB ‘Holy Grail’ Original iPhone Up For Auction, Looks To Set Record

The “Holy Grail” of iPhones could potentially be a record-breaker. Seventeen years after its debut, a rare 4GB sealed original iPhone is up for auction.

LCG Auctions believes this particular iPhone could sell for over $100,000. In July 2023, a sealed 4GB model sold for a record $190,373, while in October, another one fetched $133,435.

“Its extreme scarcity is directly related to its limited production,” LCG Auctions writes in the lot description. “Debuting on June 29th, 2007, alongside the 8GB model, the 4GB model was hampered by slow sales. Buyers chose to pay the $100 upcharge in exchange for double the storage space. The lagging sales resulted in Apple making the decision to discontinue the 4GB model on September 5th, 2007, just over two months after it was first released.”

Steve Jobs transformed smartphones after unveiling the iPhone on Jan. 9, 2007, at MacWorld San Francisco.

“Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything,” Jobs said during his keynote address.

The 4GB model initially sold for $499 in June 2007, while the 8GB model was $599.

“Impressive throughout, the front panel of the box exhibits bright color with no sign of fading,” the auction lot reads. “Imperfections are few. Seven of the eight corners are sharp, all edges are flawless, and each of the six panels appear factory fresh and retain perfect form. The factory seal is clean with correct seam details and tightness. Very light shelfwear. Labels on the reverse are correctly pristine beneath the seal. Brand new, never activated.”

According to 9to5Mac, the record sale for the original 8GB model was $63,000, substantially less than the 4GB model.

Bidding for the 4GB sealed original iPhone ends March 24.
